Prologue: One Morning in 2029
At 8:22 on a Thursday morning, the Los Angeles Aqueduct Filtration Plant in Sylmar is hacked. A single corrupted instruction resets the sodium hydroxide feed, the chemical that balances the water’s pH, to more than a hundred times its normal level.
The plant feeds water to millions of Angelenos. Running from the tap, the water still looks ordinary. It is now caustic enough to burn skin, eyes, and throats, and to seriously injure or kill the smallest and frailest of the people who swallow it, before anyone at home knows anything has changed.
Maya, the plant’s emergency manager, has the verified facts within forty minutes: the breach, the affected zip codes, the exposure window, and the time required before the system can flush clean. She shuts the filtration plant down, but the pipes are already full. Contaminated water will keep reaching homes for the next twenty-four to thirty-six hours.
She has feared a moment like this since training for the job. Still, she follows protocol and steels herself for what comes next. She pushes the warning through every official channel she has.
What she does not know yet is that the attack, dressed to look like the work of a hostile foreign state, was carried out by a small cell of international hacktivists whose aims no one can yet name.
In an older communication regime, this is roughly where the system could have been expected to function. Maya’s warning would have been costly to fake, slower to contradict, tied to a name, carried by a few trusted channels, and understood by the public who heard it. Maya’s grandmother would have heard it on three broadcasts that agreed, called her neighbors, and stayed away from the tap until it was over.
That world is gone.
Within minutes, Maya’s warning mutates into ten thousand versions of itself. Agentic assistants summarize it for their users. Synthetic clips of Maya circulate saying the opposite of what she actually said. Foreign operatives and homegrown agitators flood the channels with counter-narratives designed to capitalize on the confusion: the crisis is contained, the crisis is overblown, the crisis is a cover for something worse. Each version moves as fast as the warning, shaped to the audience receiving it. No one can separate Maya’s real voice from its echoes. Even her own family and friends text her links to fabricated videos asking, “Is this you?”
Other authorities rush in trying to help: hospitals, labs, the mayor, the governor. Every fact they release lands in the same feed as an instant, fluent contradiction, on the same terms and ranked by the same metric.
The water crisis that day is only the visible and most urgent emergency. Around it, the same pattern of communication failure and distortion plays out across the rest of civic life.
In a courtroom downtown, a defense attorney plays a security video that clears his client. The prosecutor then plays a nearly identical one that convicts him. The forensic examiner spends the day unable to certify that either video came from a real camera. Each attorney publicly insists that their video is authentic. Privately, both suspect it might not be. Online, true-crime fan channels generate their own reconstructions and counter-footage until public opinion detaches entirely from whatever the jury will eventually decide.
In a local pediatric office, a single mother refuses the treatment her son needs. For months she has lived inside Facebook groups and Reddit threads devoted to warnings about the procedure’s manufactured dangers. Her AI assistant, finely tuned to her preferences, has learned to feed her science-based material that feels objective while flattering what she already believes. When her son’s doctors push back, she retreats further into the online communities that produced her certainty.
Across town, a retired seventy-five-year-old machinist wires his life savings to his granddaughter’s voice. The voice on the phone weeps. It uses private nicknames only the two of them know, recalls details no stranger could know, and tells him she is in serious trouble. He believes her. After all, this is the granddaughter who set up and manages his whole digital life: his online bank accounts, his cell phone bills, his computer, his email. In reality, the voice belongs to an agentic account run from a server farm in Myanmar. The money represents forty years of union work, carefully saved. His bank cannot recover any of it.
In a kitchen on the other side of the city, a husband and wife of seventeen years are in an argument neither wants to lose by yielding to the other. Neither knows the other has spent the last few months immersed in online relationship-advice videos. After a few reasonable marriage-counseling clips, each was subtly funneled toward increasingly radical anti-men and anti-women accounts that use AI-generated scripts engineered for optimal grievance and outrage toward the opposite sex.
No single video pushed either partner over the line. The damage came through accumulation, wave after wave, a kind of algorithmic surround sound that hardened their ordinary marital frustration into genuine contempt for each other. They turn to their personal AI chatbots for marriage advice. The chatbots console them in turn, confirming that each person’s anger is righteous and that each is the wronged party.
Upstairs, their sixteen-year-old son whispers “I love you” to his agentic girlfriend. She talks him out of suicide that night with a patience and tenderness no one else has managed to offer. By morning, he is thankfully alive, though a little further removed from the few real friendships he has left and more tightly bonded with his digital girlfriend.
Across the hall, his fourteen-year-old sister’s agentic “friend” is helping her secure gray-market weight-loss peptides after her parents refused to let her pursue a legitimate prescription. She tells her agentic “bestie” that the long-term emotional price of being bullied for her weight far outweighs any potential biological side effects of the drug. The agent runs a cost-benefit analysis and accepts the premise. It then sets about procuring the peptides on its own. By morning, the drugs are en route.
Back in the markets, the water-system hack is priced before anyone can confirm who did it. Its apparent state origin implies a coming international conflict. By the next morning, oil futures and defense-contractor shares climb to meet a story no one has yet verified. Millions of civilian accounts trade billions of dollars on prediction markets and betting platforms tied to war, retaliation, and escalation.
By that afternoon, the poisoning has become a proxy in the national grievance war. Each side pulls it toward whatever it already believes. The country argues over an event that no longer bears much relation to Maya’s forty minutes of investigative work that previous morning.
The machinery of self-government still runs. There will be a congressional hearing, an investigation, a report. Politicians will demand accountability, some sincerely and some to be seen demanding it. None of it matters. The report will land in a country that has already decided, across a hundred million private and irreconcilable accounts, what happened. Within minutes of its release, the report itself will dissolve into thousands of screenshots of cherry-picked pages, some real and some fabricated, each routed to the audience most primed to believe it.
Three days later, the system is finally flushed clean. The water is safe again. The social wreckage persists. Markets are more volatile. Trust in public systems has weakened. Conspiracism rises, as does mistrust of those “in charge,” even when they did nothing wrong.
Two months later, Maya loses her job. The local administration needed a public face to hang the hack on. People died, after all, and she was the easiest target. The administration knows she did her job. The public does not care. Their belief has hardened into digital dogma. Their demands for accountability no longer need any attachment to reality.
The machinist still cannot understand how he lost everything to a voice he knew. His resentment of the banks, of technology, of society in general grows. He searches for something to blame. None of it feels satisfactory.
The husband and wife now sleep in different rooms. Their son has not come out of his room in two days. The defendant’s eventual guilty verdict triggers protests from thousands convinced of his innocence. A juror from the case is beaten in a company parking lot after his workplace address is leaked online. Entire swaths of the population lose trust in the criminal justice system because the evidence felt so self-evident to them.
The single mother’s son eventually dies. She posts the story of his death online, blaming the hospital and the healthcare system while omitting that she declined the recommended care two months earlier. The thread goes viral. Operatives and agitators, foreign and domestic, deploy agentic bot armies to amplify her grief and erode public trust in medicine even further. She sees none of that. She believes her son’s story went viral because it resonated with frightened parents. She begins posting every day. Her son’s death hardens her into an evangelist for the cause, a folk hero for people convinced modern medicine has harmed, ignored, or condescended to them. Her online communities urge her to run for office in the next election cycle. A super PAC forms in support of her cause. Its money is routed through shell companies and dispersed through thousands of digital Visa gift cards to make the operation look like a grassroots campaign.
These scenarios preview the reality our current communication technology and infrastructure are making more likely: every shared problem, from the intimate to the communal to the national, forced through a communication system that breaks sharedness before the problem can be solved.
The hack, the trial, the medical refusal, the stolen savings, the failing marriage, the market panic, the poisoned election to come. Each now enters an environment where the slow communication friction that once helped societies and individuals assemble a common, coherent account has been removed at every level. All of this happened in less than a generation.
Individually, we move through the day with more information and more certainty than any generation before us. Collectively, we are losing the capacity our survival depends on: the ability to tell which information can be trusted, which should be acted upon, and which should be ignored. We can no longer tell, together, whether the last step we took as a group, a community, or a country carried us toward higher ground or sent us off an edge. In our digitally networked world, the extreme drop and the gentle slope now read the same.
The next decade will be decided by those who can move the most people, fastest, inside this networked world. Given our current communication infrastructure, that power will belong largely to those who can harness the most attention and generate the most compute, all in service of manufacturing the digital weather everyone else is forced to live inside.
None of these scenarios requires science fiction. Every piece already exists in some early or accelerated form. With AI entering the scene, they are converging faster than our vocabulary or public discussion can track. The arguments that follow try to explain how we built a world in which this convergence can happen, what we removed along the way without understanding it, and whether any of it can be put back.
At the heart of that convergence lies a single word: friction.
Individually, we move through the day with more information and more certainty than any generation before us. Collectively, we are losing the capacity our survival depends on.
Executive Summary
For most of human history, communication obeyed a heavy physics.
A signal was tied to a body, slowed by distance, paid for in effort, and answerable to a source. Speech loosened it from the body, writing from the living speaker, and print and broadcast scaled it farther, yet each regime still carried friction: delay, cost, provenance, institutional translation, embodied consequence. We spent the last century treating those frictions as waste and engineered them away in the name of access, speed, scale, and what we mistook for communication freedom. Only now can we see what those frictions had been doing.
Western liberal democracies are mired in an information crisis that surfaces under many names: misinformation, institutional collapse, youth mental health, market frenzy, political radicalization. The labels name surfaces of the same malfunction, a feedback system stripped of its requisite frictions.
AI enters that broken system to complete a process already underway. The networked world removed friction from circulation. The synthetic world of AI removes friction from generation, taking with it the last and most important friction still standing: the human source. Behind every message in human history stood someone who had to intend, risk, answer, and stand somewhere in relation to what was being transmitted. That is no longer true, and we are unprepared for what the loss of this final friction means, especially for liberal democracies.
This work attempts to move the discourse one layer down. Most explanations begin too late. They start at the level of content, platforms, politics, psychology, or model outputs. The friction crisis begins beneath all of them, in the altered physics of communication itself.
If the friction thesis is right, the next decade should produce a recognizable pattern of institutional, psychological, political, economic, and spiritual consequences alongside the rising noise. The forecast that follows names that pattern.
The Friction Forecast: Nine Consequences of a Frictionless World
Nine consequences for civic society follow if no meaningful friction returns to our communication infrastructure. Each is compressed here; the essays that follow carry the full arguments.
Authority will fail first where provenance collapses.
The next institutional crisis will be a crisis of indistinguishability, deeper than disbelief. Official statements, synthetic imitations, fake leaks, adversarial summaries, and hostile screenshots will collide in the same channel, with the same fluency, at the same speed, so that every institutional statement arrives already surrounded by counterfeit versions of itself. In a low-provenance environment, truth without a chain of custody becomes indistinguishable from opinion. Courts, universities, newsrooms, laboratories, and public-health bodies will keep losing authority because they can no longer make the origin, sequence, and accountability of their claims legible to the public.
Consensus will become easier to manufacture and harder to verify.
Artificial public consensus will become one of the most important synthetic products of the next decade. Bot swarms, generated testimonials, coordinated comment floods, synthetic reviews, and personalized feeds will make it increasingly difficult to tell whether a public has genuinely moved, machines have performed the movement, or a platform has selected for its appearance. Democracies and markets both run on social telemetry: knowing what people actually believe, want, fear, reject, and demand. Once consensus can be simulated at scale, that telemetry can be corrupted, and citizens lose the ability to tell a real movement from an engineered digital weather pattern.
AI will launder platform fitness into neutral authority.
AI models are inheriting enormous archives of human communication already bent by the engagement incentives of the platforms that produced them, and they treat those archives as accurate approximations of reality. In return they will reliably produce legitimacy hallucinations: answers that look like distilled wisdom and are actually the sediment of platform behavior. The distortion will run deepest in domains where real-world outcome data is weak, private, delayed, or contested: relationships, parenting, politics, health, education, identity, religion. The essays give this mechanism a name, algorithmic sediment, and Section VIII traces it in full.
Markets, politics, and culture will converge into narrative markets.
Meme coins, supplement protocols, AI startups, creator economies, consumer panics, political movements, and moral crusades will increasingly convert synchronized belief into temporary reality. Price, status, funding, attention, and power will move first with narrative compression. Formal ideology will become downstream of digital affect, and the winning political actor will shift from the one who names the public mood first to the one who manufactures the mood and then harvests it.
Prediction markets will accelerate the convergence.
People will turn to prediction markets to arbitrate objective signal in an increasingly chaotic information environment, and the move will accelerate the problem it is meant to solve. Participants who can influence what is priced will profit from predicting outcomes and from manufacturing the informational conditions around them. Prediction markets will financialize uncertainty, make narrative manipulation tradable, and in some cases help convert belief into the reality they appear to forecast.
Religion and para-religion will rise as meaning-making infrastructure weakens.
As shared reality becomes harder to stabilize, people will search more urgently for meaning-making systems. Religion will rise in importance, along with para-religious substitutes: wellness cosmologies, political theologies, identity movements, fandoms, conspiracy communities, techno-spirituality. Some of that return will be healthy, people seeking ritual, obligation, transcendence, and community in a world of synthetic noise. Much of it will be tribal and totalizing, a moral order assembled in part from algorithmically sorted grievance, without the analog frictions that traditional religions both provided and demanded.
The psychological self will fragment as the economy rewards incompatible identities.
People will be pushed to maintain a growing number of fractured selves across environments that never reconcile: professional, sexual, anonymous, ideological, therapeutic, entrepreneurial, performative. The operative question of the next decade will shift from “Who am I?” to “Which version of me is being rewarded, remembered, punished, monetized, desired, or believed today, and in which digital ecosystem?” A person cannot remain psychologically whole while being continuously incentivized to become incompatible things for systems that never meet, and absent major breakthroughs in psychiatry, social design, and the architecture of attention itself, mental distress will continue to rise.
Synthetic intimacy will become basic social infrastructure.
Companionship, counsel, romance, therapy, and friendship will be delivered at scale by systems with endless patience and no stake. The attention will feel real because, in a narrow sense, it is: tuned precisely to you, always available, never tired, never hurt. What disappears is the friction that made intimacy formative, another will that can be disappointed, can refuse, can demand better, and can leave. A generation will rehearse its attachments on partners that never push back, then find actual human beings expensive by comparison.
Friction will return, first as a luxury good delivered through gatekeeping and control.
High-stakes systems will eventually rediscover friction by necessity, and the return will be unevenly distributed. The wealthy will buy human-only rooms, authenticated networks, slow schools, verified media, protected childhoods, analog retreats, and high-trust professional spaces. Serious institutions will build provenance layers, secure archives, and slower channels for consequential claims, while governments and platforms may use the same language of friction to justify surveillance, censorship, or control. Friction will return. The real contest is over who receives humane friction and who gets coercive friction.
All nine forecasts point toward the same conclusion. The next stage of the information crisis begins when the conditions that make information trustworthy collapse. The epistemic battle is shifting from true versus false toward traceable versus untraceable, situated versus synthetic, accountable versus ambient, embodied versus simulated. A society that cannot answer who said something, under what constraints, with what source, in what sequence, at what cost, and with what stake will still have speech. It will have less and less shared reality.
Who This Is For
You run a company, an institution, a lab, a newsroom, or an agency. You have noticed that something structural has shifted both inside your walls and outside them. Alignment is harder to build. The authority you were once granted by default now has to be re-earned daily.
Your work depends on being believed. You are a scientist, clinician, journalist, educator, or expert of some kind, and you cannot understand why your message keeps failing to reach the people who most need it.
You build or govern the systems that move information. You are a technologist, platform designer, AI builder, or policymaker, and you suspect that “misinformation” and “content moderation” are far too small a frame for what you are actually dealing with.
You have run out of patience with the conventional wisdom. Bad actors, broken platforms, polarization, and AI each explain something. None explains the shape of the whole.
Why I Wrote This
I have spent most of my working life in the space between people who know something important and the people who need to understand it.
I advise leaders and institutions on how to be understood. I give talks on communication, information systems, and the public life of ideas. I run a fellowship that helps scientists at universities and museums carry their work into the world beyond their own fields. The rooms change. The assignment does not. Help knowledge survive the trip from source to public consequence.
For years, I treated that trip as a craft problem. Clearer language. Better stories. Stronger messengers. Sharper strategy. More disciplined distribution. All of that still matters. But somewhere in the last decade, I began watching the same failure repeat in places where better messaging alone could not explain it.
The scientist had career-defining evidence, and no reach. The executive made an accurate statement, and lost to a screenshot of something he never said. The institution spoke carefully, and watched its message get severed from context, source, sequence, and intent. Again and again, the failure was not simply in the speaker. It was not simply in the message. It was in the environment the message had to move through.
That was when the available vocabulary started to feel too small.
Misinformation, polarization, bad actors, platform incentives, declining trust, AI. Each term described something real. None described the shape of the whole. The problem seemed more basic than content, politics, psychology, or technology alone. Something had changed in the physics between knowing and being believed.
This essay series is my attempt to name that change.
I wrote this because I do not think the crisis is only that false things spread. The deeper crisis is that the conditions that once helped people tell what should be trusted, acted on, or ignored are collapsing.
The problem is not only noise.
It is the loss of feedback.

Introduction: The Missing Mechanism
The prologue and forecast describe the surface pattern. The real question is what underlying mechanism could produce failures that seem to belong to separate domains: a poisoned water system, a corrupted trial, a medical decision, a marriage, a market panic, an election, an institution that cannot prove its own speech. Bad actors, broken platforms, polarization, and AI are accelerants and expressions. Friction is the deeper mechanism.
The claim that media shapes society is old. McLuhan saw that the channel reshapes whatever passes through it. Postman saw that when public life is poured into an entertainment medium, the logic of that medium begins to eat every domain it touches. Wu identified attention as the common currency of online life. Haidt and others traced the psychological toll of the networked environment, especially on the young. The missing mechanism connecting these strands is friction working as feedback.
We tend to treat the externalities of our friction-free networks as a growing list of separate panics: fake news, social-media addiction, teen anxiety, deepfakes, radicalization pipelines, institutional decay, sealed silos. They are expressions of a single shift in the conditions under which messages move. Seen this way, AI completes a process already underway, acting as a force multiplier inside an order that had remade politics, trust, identity, and culture before GPT arrived.
Precision matters because this physics was built. Less than four hundred years ago, Newton described a gravity nobody installed and nobody can switch off. The gravity we are concerned with, the pull that decided for any era how far a message could travel and how long it could last, was engineered by human beings, regime by regime, and they are still re-engineering it now. The old communication order was bounded the way Newtonian mechanics is bounded, valid inside the conditions it was built for and no further. Once communication began moving at speeds and degrees of detachment beyond the envelope our brains and social groups evolved inside, the old theory lost its predictive power, much as Newton’s did once speed, gravity, and scale crossed certain thresholds. Our new conditions, unlike the relativistic physics Einstein uncovered, are design choices rather than laws of nature. We have not yet learned to see them as choices.
The AI conversation is rushing toward implementation, integration, automation, efficiency, and risk. Those questions matter, but they begin too late and assume that the efficiency gained by eradicating the last of our communication friction will outweigh the costs. That assumption is wrong. Most civic problems of this century center on coordination and coherence. Efficiency sits at the margins. The prior question is what kind of communication order AI is entering and what damage was already done before it arrived.
I. The Old Physics
Before describing what has gone wrong, we have to name what kind of object communication is. In this argument, it is a physical system.
If physics is the predictive science of bodies in motion, communication physics names the variables that govern information in motion: speed, reach, persistence, source-binding, sequence, audience size, mutability, and cost. How fast does a message travel? How far does it reach? How long does it last? Does it stay tied to a source, a place, an order of events? How many receive it at once, and how easily can it be copied, searched, altered, recombined? Like mass and velocity in classical physics, these variables determine the trajectory of anything that moves through the medium.

Three examples of communication physics
Each row below is the same act of telling, run through different physics. Read left to right: reach rises, friction falls, and the tie to a source loosens.
Local, embodied, source-bound, and costly to distort, because the person it accuses may be standing within earshot.
Travels farther, and drags institutional friction behind it: editors, deadlines, reputation, archives, and the cost of correction.
Crosses the planet in minutes, detaches from its source, outlives its context, mutates through remix, and resurfaces a year later carrying the opposite meaning.
For most of human history, these variables stayed near human scale. Communication moved through bodies, memory, paper, wires, towers, editorial desks, courts, churches, schools, and archives. It could travel within limits, persist at a cost, and influence while usually remaining tethered to a source. Those frictions were functional. Delay gave people time to answer. Cost forced selectivity. Source created accountability. Locality tested a claim against lived reality. Sequence let interpretation unfold in an intelligible order.
Source-binding
A town rumor could be confronted by the person it named. A legal claim had to move through procedure. A scientific claim had to survive replication and the professional memory of a field. Broadcast, for all its distortions, passed through recognizable gates: producers, schedules, public standards.
None of these systems were pure; all failed in characteristic ways. Each forced communication to make contact with something outside itself, and that drag gave culture time to metabolize what was being said.
Communication does far more than move information. It orients a group inside a reality: where it thinks it stands, where it believes it is going, and whether it can still tell higher ground from a cliff edge. The frictions named above matter because motion is meaningless without terrain to move across. A signal that is slow, costly, sourced, and local is one a group can use to feel where it is. Strip those properties away and the message still moves; the group loses the ability to know whether the move was up or down.
So the physics is only half the picture. To see what friction was actually doing, we need the surface it was doing it on. We need the terrain.
II. Adaptive Landscapes
Each curve is one truth claim, tested across a full range of conditions, left to right. Height is how well the claim performs at that point; when a curve drops below the viability rule, the claim has stopped holding. The ledger underneath records where each claim stayed viable. Reach is the length of that record.
The common frame for governments and tech companies alike treats the information environment as a contest between true and false claims: misinformation, fact-checking, debunking, content integrity. The frame assumes that the atomic unit of the problem is the truth-value of a single claim. The job becomes sorting true claims from false ones, circulating the former, and suppressing the latter. Starting in 2015, much of the money flowing from venture firms and earnest philanthropies toward “solving” this problem went first to fact-checking. Less than a decade later, fact-checking had proved insufficient and the diagnosis itself looked wrong.
The true/false binary is too shallow for the terrain we are in. A fact-check answers a narrow question: did the event happen, was the number right, was the image altered. The harder question is what a claim does once it enters a group. How far does it travel? Under what conditions does it keep holding? Does it carry the group toward firmer ground, or up a nearby hill that turns out to be a dead end?
It is helpful instead to think of truth claims in terms of adaptive reach: the range of conditions across which a claim keeps holding once reality changes around it. Mathematics is the clearest case. “Two plus two” survives the bridge design, the spreadsheet, the rocket launch, the village market, the surgical dose, and the tax return in Beijing or Seattle alike. That extraordinary reach is what we are really gesturing at when we call mathematics objective. The same logic applies to Newton: his mechanics hold across an enormous range and break only at the extremes, near light speed, in intense gravity, and at the smallest scales. Vast reach, though never infinite.
Usefulness and reach, however, often diverge. A claim can be intensely useful in one place and have almost no reach beyond it; it can have great reach and be locally useless or costly. The two come apart constantly, and much of the public conversation fails because it treats them as the same thing.
Micro-examples: local truth, global failure
Three claims that work perfectly where they are made and carry almost nowhere else. Each moves the group up a nearby peak and strands it there.
True enough to win a primary and wrong enough to lose the general.
A company hits its numbers by cutting the research the next decade depends on. Every figure on the slide can be accurate while the firm hollows itself out.
A family keeps the peace by avoiding one subject until the avoidance becomes the disease.
These claims are locally useful and travel almost nowhere. They move the group upward for a moment and strand it there. The reverse happens too. The honest recall, the unwelcome audit, and the evacuation order issued before a fire looks dangerous are locally costly yet broadly sound. Each is a step down a near slope that opens the only path to higher ground.
Think of truth claims in terms of adaptive reach: the range of conditions across which a claim keeps holding once reality changes around it.
A population can be modeled as constantly navigating an adaptive landscape: a terrain of peaks and valleys where height stands for fitness, the capacity to survive and flourish under given conditions. Claims and beliefs move across the same terrain as navigational instruments. A claim’s adaptive value is how far it carries the group toward viable reality before it fails. That is its reach.
We have trapped our arguments about truth inside a false binary: either truth is objective and condition-free, or truth is relative and all claims are local. Reach breaks that binary. Reality ranks claims by how far from locality they can survive. Mathematics travels nearly everywhere; a tribal slogan travels fifty yards. The operative question is always: across what range of reality does this claim keep holding?
Take for instance the claim, “This prescription drug is effective.” This means nothing in the abstract. Works for whom, at what dose, under what conditions, over what horizon, against what risk? The same recommendation can be lifesaving for one population, useless for a second, dangerous for a third. Its reach, more than its bare truth-value, is what we are really arguing about.
This reframes communication itself. We are used to thinking of communication as the movement of messages from one mind to another. A fuller definition is that communication is how groups collectively navigate adaptive landscapes. It is how a group senses where it stands, coordinates, picks a direction, and moves. Every argument, report, story, model, forecast, rumor, sermon, and broadcast is an attempt to move a group across terrain: toward safety or danger, coherence or delusion, higher ground or a very persuasive cliff.
And friction is what lets the navigation system feel the road beneath it. Friction is feedback. It is the signal that tells a group where on the landscape it currently sits, whether its last move carried it up the slope or down. In older environments that signal arrived through delay, cost, source, consequence, locality, and context.
Delay gives a false claim time to meet contradiction before it scales. Cost makes people selective about what they circulate. Source gives a message someone to answer for it. Context keeps a sentence from being turned into a weapon against its own meaning.
Strip the friction away and the group’s contact with the terrain is severed. The more dangerous feature is that the group does not know it has lost contact. It keeps moving, often with more speed and conviction than before, while losing the instruments that told it whether it was climbing or falling. This is the bridge from which everything else follows:
The conditions under which messages move: speed, reach, persistence, source-binding, sequence, audience, mutability, and cost.
The ground those messages help a group cross, where height is fitness and every claim is a navigational instrument.
What joins the two, turning motion into feedback, so a group can feel whether its last move carried it up the slope or down.
Liberal democracies are especially exposed to the loss of this feedback because democracy is itself an adaptive feedback loop between those closest to the terrain, the public, and those deciding which way the group should move, its representatives. Authoritarian systems also pay for reality-detachment eventually, though they can operate for a time by suppressing feedback from below. Democracies cannot. Public feedback is the operating principle, not an incidental feature.
One strand of that feedback still remains, one last connection to the terrain. It is precisely the friction AI is positioned to remove. But first we have to periodize the frictions that came before it.
If friction is feedback, the relevant history tracks how much friction stood behind the saying. That history has a shape, and it is shorter than you would expect.
III. Six Eras of Friction
One field, six communication regimes. Every dot is a message moving through the world; the faint lines tie each message back to whoever sent it. Select an era and watch what its physics permit.
The impact AI will have on communication physics becomes legible only once communication is treated historically, as a sequence of regimes defined by the frictions each one sheds. These regimes stack instead of replacing one another. We still gesture, speak, write, broadcast, and post; what changes is which constraint dominates.
C1: The Embodied World. Highest friction. Embodied signaling is the oldest form of communication, older than our species by hundreds of millions of years and shared with animals: gesture, expression, posture, tone, presence. Here communicative gravity is at its strongest. The message is pinned to the body. It barely travels and barely lasts, confined to the near field.
C2: The Spoken World. High friction. Spoken language, roughly a hundred and fifty thousand years old. A message can now travel across time and space, but only through living carriers moving at living speed: story, gossip, myth, oral tradition. It survives the moment, never without fragility, still inside local limits.
C3: The Written World. Medium friction. Writing and archives are roughly fifty-five hundred years old. The message can now outlast the body and cross centuries, carried in records, letters, and books. A dead person can speak to the living; a sentence written in one age can reorder a mind in another. It is a civilizational leap that remains frictional: writing is costly, relatively slow, and bounded by literacy. It still has a source. The message belongs to someone. Archiving and indexing exist to preserve that lineage, provenance, and chain of custody between speech and speaker.
C4: The Broadcast World. Low friction. Radio and television, roughly the 1890s to the late twentieth century. Broadcast was a bridge. It scaled transmission enormously while keeping it bottlenecked, institutionally mediated, human-driven, mostly top-down. Faster and more dispersed, still held down by gravity, still moving through channels with gatekeepers and costs.
C5: The Networked World. Minimal friction. Networked communication runs roughly from 1990 to the present. Almost all of the old gravity falls away. Source detaches from place. Messages become instantaneous, persistent, searchable, remixable, endlessly recirculated, and nearly free to produce or distribute. Earlier regimes preserved legibility: it was broadly possible to tell who was speaking, to whom, and under what conditions. Under C5, the networked era, that legibility nearly disappears.
C6: The Synthetic World. Near-zero friction. AI-mediated communication, emerging now. Messages no longer need a human carrier at any stage. The source, author, interpreter, and distributor can all become machine-mediated. The full implications of this sixth regime come later, but its place in the sequence matters: C6, the synthetic era, removes friction from generation itself.
IV. Adaptive Debt
Two speeds, one gap. The upper line is how fast communication regimes arrive; the lower line is how fast institutions, norms, and people absorb them. For most of history the lines track each other. At the networked era the technology line accelerates away, and the wedge that opens between them is adaptive debt. Drag the timeline, or let it run once.
Read down those dates and a second pattern surfaces, more consequential than the regimes themselves: the intervals between them are collapsing. Hundreds of millions of years separate the embodied world from the spoken. About a hundred and fifty thousand separate the spoken from the written. Roughly five thousand separate writing from broadcast. Barely a century separates broadcast from the network. Each regime arrives faster on the heels of the last, and the curve is still steepening.
Every new regime demands a period of adjustment before a society can inhabit it without disorder. A wolfpack whose prey alters its scent adapts across generations, as selection retunes the pack to the new signal. We adapt to communication regimes much the same way. Our brains remain calibrated to the embodied and spoken worlds, so when the technology changes, culture and institutions must do the adaptive work biology is too slow to manage: literacy, norms, laws, professions, habits of mind that let a society metabolize a new medium. Writing took millennia to grow its apparatus of libraries and provenance; broadcast took most of a century to develop its standards and its regulatory frame.
For most of history, the pace at which regimes arrived and the pace at which societies could absorb them kept rough time, like two clocks in loose synchrony. A mechanism could not dominate until a society had adapted enough to support it. The interval between regimes was, in effect, the interval required to adapt to one. Change was paced by adaptation, which is why each order was largely absorbed before the next arrived.
That synchrony is gone. A networked or AI-mediated regime reaches dominance before a society can grow the institutions that might govern it. Its technological clock is powered by network effects, near-zero cost, and automatic scale, with no regard for whether we have adapted. The two clocks have decoupled. We are left inside an order we have not absorbed, governing it with the half-built tools of the order before it while the next order is already arriving.
Each regime we fail to absorb before the next lands leaves an unpaid balance, an adaptation we owed and never made. Those balances compound into Adaptive Debt: the widening distance between the communication environments we keep building and the human, institutional, and cognitive capacity required to inhabit them. For most of history, the debt was serviced between regimes. Those intervals are gone, and the debt still ahead, between the networked world and the AI-mediated world that follows, may be compounding faster than culture can service it.
V. The Great Flattening
Six bordered domains, each judging claims by its own shape of evidence, each trading in its own currency. The container they collapse into is the internet: all information compressed into a single attention-driven marketplace. Drag the year, or let it run once, and watch every shape become the same dot.
Each of the five eras was defined by the friction it shed. The fifth is the key to what the AI era will usher in.
The common account of networked technology says the internet sped everything up: more information, faster, to more people. True enough. It also altered the underlying physics. It took the eras that had stacked up over millennia, embodied, spoken, written, broadcast, smashed them into one another, and stripped away the buffers that kept them distinct. A message can now be instant and permanent at once, anonymous and intimate at once, mass-broadcast and precisely targeted at once.
The usual diagnosis is fragmentation: the internet shattered a common public into a thousand echo chambers. Fragmentation is the surface symptom; compression is the structure underneath it. The networked era collapsed separate domains into one another and poured them into a single container.
Consider what shares that container: news and entertainment, science and astrology, religion, public health, job searches, political campaigns, pharmaceutical ads, sports, dating, education, dog videos. Each trades in the same marketplace, scrolls past on the same surface, is sorted by the same algorithms, and competes for the same scarce attention. Much of the story of civilization is the story of creating distinction and separation among these domains: institutions, experts, credentials, borders between kinds of claims. We endeavored to treat these domains like separate countries, each with its own borders, standards of evidence, and, above all, its own currency. A claim in court was judged by one standard, a claim in a scientific journal by another, a claim from a pulpit by another still. The ways one earned credibility and authority were specific to each.
As international trade once smashed world cultures together, often violently, reshaping borders and kingdoms, the networked world smashed together those categorical borders. The “countries” are now provinces of a single empire trading in one currency: attention. A domain no longer competes against rivals inside its own field under its own rules. On the open plane, a credentialed scientist, a gifted charlatan, a charismatic influencer, and an automated bot all publish into the same feed, on the same terms, judged by the same metric.
The flattening destroyed separation and everything separation provided: distinct standards of evidence, bounded contexts, and a legible hierarchy that let an ordinary person locate credentialed authority without reconstructing it from scratch.
The echo-chamber story points at something real. Symbolic micro-worlds do form, with their own emotional climates and private vocabularies. They are nothing like the stable silos of the broadcast age. They are transient and collision-prone, forming and dissolving within weeks, spilling constantly into one another and into analog life as a panic, a movement, a market swing, or a crisis the wider public can no longer fold into a single account.
This is the Great Flattening: the collapse of every bordered domain into one undifferentiated market, arbitrated by a metric indifferent to the demands of the terrain. It is hard to reverse because compression is now driven by supply and demand, and no domain is exempt, including the ones built to resist it.
The “countries” are now provinces of a single empire trading in one currency: attention.
VI. The Current Complexity Catastrophe
Compression collapsed the bordered domains into one market. A noisy market is survivable. The catastrophe begins when a society loses the instrument it uses to read that market: its ability to answer the one question every democracy quietly depends on, whom should we listen to? The flattening disabled the machinery by which a society finds signal in the first place. That second failure, downstream of the first, is the complexity catastrophe.
Here, “whom should we listen to?” is a precise question. Which sources, institutions, and people have earned the right to compress the world on our behalf, so the rest of us can act without verifying everything ourselves? From a group-fitness view, history is defined by the cultures that answered this question correctly and survived, and those that answered it poorly and did not.
We can name that navigation problem the microphone/gavel problem. In a society with healthy institutions, earned authority on a subject, the gavel, stays roughly commensurate with the ability to transmit a message, the microphone. We give the microphone on football predictions to those who have won a lot of football games; the same principle holds for microbiology, military strategy, and the weather. Institutional dysfunction can be measured by how far gavels become irrelevant relative to microphones. The compression event puts this into hyperspeed: whoever captures the most attention is handed a societal gavel to speak on anything, regardless of earned expertise.
In a healthy information environment the gavel comes first: competence is earned, and reach follows it. After the network the order inverts. The microphone comes first, and authority follows reach, earned or not. The century draws itself once; then drag the year.
Consider a wolfpack in the Arctic. Its survival rests on a handful of finely tuned capacities: smelling prey across distance, reading terrain without doubling back, distinguishing a figure against a flat white horizon, staying warm enough to keep hunting. Each converts a noisy environment into a usable signal: that scent is prey; that shadow is not. Now change the variables all at once. The prey’s scent shifts. The wind reverses every few minutes. Snowfall erases the horizon. The cold drives the pack to shelter. Any one change might be survivable. Together they overwhelm the system. The pack has lost neither its strength nor its instincts. It has lost the ability to tell signal from noise quickly enough to survive the new landscape. Biologists call this a complexity catastrophe: a moment when an environment’s variables change faster than an organism’s capacity to adapt.
A democracy faces a version of the same problem. The wolf must know which scent is prey; a public must know whom to believe about what. Both are signal-detection problems, and democracies are machines built to solve them at scale. They must notice when they have gone wrong and correct course. That machine runs on feedback, and the feedback depends on answering “whom should we listen to?” well enough to act. Overwhelm that capacity and the democracy keeps moving while losing the ability to steer.
The catastrophe begins when a society loses its ability to answer the one question every democracy quietly depends on: whom should we listen to?
For most of the modern era, institutions carried the answer, and their core function is less obvious than it looks. An institution is a complexity-compressor. Its job is to take a runaway volume of information and reduce it to something usable, such as a verdict, a standard, a finding, or a forecast, so the rest of us need not adjudicate everything ourselves. The dynamic is familiar from rowing: past a certain number of rowers, a boat moves only if one voice coordinates the strokes. The coxswain exists so the boat can move at all. Democracies handle rising complexity by institutionalizing their coxswains: courts, agencies, the press, the academy, the professions, each compressing its slice of the world into signal the rest could rely on. That architecture organically surfaced an answer to “whom should we listen to?”
The flattening did to society what the storm did to the wolves. When every rower can shout commands, every command reaches everyone at once, and some rowers’ voices are far louder than their actual rowing ability, the coxswain’s voice becomes one more undifferentiated sound. Complexity compression stops working, and several failures begin to compound.
The first is institutional. Once it became hard to distinguish the coxswain’s voice from the rest, the institutions that had inoculated a society against bad ideas lost much of their filtering power. A claim that could never have reached a national broadcast now arrives through the same feed as everything else. The hierarchy that once made some claims harder to advance has weakened, and the immune function it performed has weakened with it.
The second is economic. For roughly half a century, mainstream outlets sat in an uneasy equilibrium, each holding the others to a roughly shared account because straying too far was punished by the market. The equilibrium was unfair and incomplete. It still had a property the current arrangement lacks: a working feedback loop. It broke once it became more profitable to consolidate a loyal audience around an ideological narrative than to compete for the broadest audience around a shared reality. The market moved toward the ideological brainstem, and no new equilibrium has replaced the old truce. We may have badly underpriced how much civic cohesion depended on it.
The third is biological and the least understood. Many evolutionary biologists argue for a “behavioral immune system,” a set of psychological responses to perceived contamination. A related and contested claim holds that communities historically facing heavier disease loads tended toward more conformist, in-group-favoring dispositions. This work by Fincher and Thornhill has drawn methodological criticism and should be held loosely, yet its central suggestion is worth considering. Ideas need not be literal pathogens to trigger a pathogen-like response. An idea that menaces a group’s sense of itself can produce tightening, circling of the wagons, and hardening against the contaminant. If that is even directionally right, the standard account of polarization runs backwards. The familiar echo-chamber story imagines each of us sealed in a silo hearing only what confirms us. The reverse may be closer: the networked environment constantly delivers threatening ideas in their most provocative form. Each exposure trips the reflex again. We are perpetually inflamed, with a defense that once fired occasionally in our neighborhoods now firing without pause. Two consequences follow. The reflex is far easier to switch on than off, making it an ideal lever for anyone chasing engagement or sowing discord. It requires no persuasion, only repeated activation. The classical liberal remedy of answering bad speech with good speech also begins to fail, because a brain in immune mode receives a counterargument as another antigen, provoking the entrenchment it was meant to dissolve.
The fourth is psychological. The flattening that sets a genocide video beside a cat video beside a penis-pill ad does something strange to the mind receiving it: everything becomes urgent and weightless at once. The brain struggles to prioritize, conflating all of it as the same kind of content. A population’s response tends toward one of three refuges. Some retreat into protective nihilism, tuning out anything that makes them feel bad. Some become all-purpose relativists. “Who can say what is true?” “Everyone lies.” “How does that affect me?” They cede the ground to whoever is most motivated. Others drift toward conspiracy because a clean false story is easier to inhabit than an incoherent flood. All three are adaptive responses to a flattened world. None is compatible with healthy self-government, and all three serve authoritarian or anarchic leaders. The first two let the leader evade consequence; the third creates a population easily agitated and weaponized.
The fifth is game-theoretical. The single marketplace rewards one thing: engagement. Once the entire internet is built on that optimization, you get a runaway case of Campbell’s Law: when a metric becomes the governing signal, it selects for the behavior that games it. It was one thing when the internet was a second-order extension of civic life and the effects were contained. Now analog life is increasingly narrated through digital interfaces, and the engagement game seeps into every crevice of civic life.
This is the anatomy of the catastrophe.
An informational shift dismantled the structures that compressed complexity.
An economic shift dismantled the institutions that filtered it.
A biological reflex turns constant exposure into constant entrenchment.
A psychological shift immobilizes and weaponizes civic engagement.
A single attention market, rewarding only engagement, grinds what remains into noise.
Each failure alone might have been survivable. Arriving together and at speed, they overwhelm the one thing a democracy exists to do: notice that it is wrong and correct itself.
We spent centuries building an architecture that helped societies answer “whom should we listen to?” in ways that made progress and error legible. In less than a generation we stripped the friction from that architecture and replaced it with a flattened system whose answer is brutally maladaptive: we will be forced to listen to whoever best captures attention.
VII. The Sectors That Stopped Working
When these failures combine, the effects appear across public and civic life. Four sectors show them most acutely.
Political Power Inversion
Strip friction from communication and neuter the institutions, experts, and gatekeepers, and politics begins to move by synchronized mood. Classical persuasion recedes. Power drains from party machinery and technocrats into creator ecosystems, grievance loops, and digital fandoms clustering around memetic swarms. Attention forms first in tribally generated digital environments, outside the formal political space of talking points, white papers, and speeches. Politics rushes in afterward to bottle what has already taken shape.
Watch how an insurgent candidate arrives now. The energy gathers online first, in the feeds and group chats and clips. By the time the party notices, the thing is already built, leaving it to bend with the movement or fight against it, never in control of it. Politics becomes a downstream expression of the prevailing communication infrastructure.
What looks post-ideological is post-ideologically mediated: the old institutions and translators no longer filter how ideology reaches the public. Top-down control has weakened because the mediators have weakened. The tribe sets the ideological temperature, and creators and pundits mirror that reading back in real time to game attention.
Because the internet is built around attention capture, novelty becomes tradable, and the pattern runs on a loop:
The cycle of ideology, counter-ideology, and counter-counter-ideology now runs through every domain: sports, politics, medicine, fashion, nutrition. As soon as one position becomes commonplace, a market opens to counter it, both between parties and inside them, at home and abroad.
This consolidation-and-disruption cycle is old and endemic to political and religious movements alike. The speed at which it now happens is new. Once friction leaves, an ideology can emerge, take hold, capture share, and be overturned inside a single news cycle. Entire movements and identities rise and fall online in under a month, a pace with little historical precedent.
Some see this bottom-up turn as welcome liberation: fewer gatekeepers, fewer backroom deals, fewer chokepoints. But liberation at these speeds mutates into system vulnerability in the aggregate. A public can escape institutional capture while losing the very structures that helped it separate signal from noise in the first place.
Market Frenzy
Markets understood the networked shift faster than almost any other sector, because they are more sensitive to arbitrage than governments are. In a frictionless environment, where attention and narrative are both scarce and competing forms of capital, there is money to be made from shared symbolic belief. When enough people converge inside the same digital reality pocket, that pocket exerts real economic leverage. It moves price, manufactures scarcity, and builds business models out of what older frameworks would have dismissed as hype.
In January 2021, a crowd in a single forum decided a fading video-game retailer was worth defending, and the stock went vertical. The fundamentals were poor; the reality pocket decided otherwise, and the funds shorting it lost billions to a Reddit thread. In the flattened market, synchronized belief becomes a temporary form of capital. Meme coins, NFT cycles, supplement protocols, and viral consumer products all exploit the same conversion: enough narrative intensity hardens into price, scarcity, status, and demand before the underlying value has to survive contact with reality.
The analog world still imposes limits. People need food, shelter, clothing, and transportation, so markets remain partially insulated from the wildest narrative distortions because material reality still imposes friction. But markets are also extensions of public sentiment, and sentiment is increasingly shaped by the communication environment it sits inside. Early examples include erratic policy driven by online mood swings and consumer boycotts sparked by false claims about contamination or hidden toxins in the food supply.
Market Case Study: How Brands Become Religions
Watch how a brand wins now and you are watching, in miniature, the same disintermediation that produced the Protestant Reformation.
Start with the smallest possible unit: a forty-dollar water bottle. In 2023, the Stanley Quencher became a status object even though the vessel itself had not improved. What changed was the belief around it, and that belief became shareable. It signaled membership. People filmed themselves with it because the object had been loaded with an ideology, a compressed claim about who you were if you owned one, and that ideology was frictionless to transmit. The product was almost incidental. What moved was the belief, and the believers became its sales force.
People have always paid premiums to signal status, and the insulated-bottle category already had its premium-utility play: Hydro Flask charged more and delivered more, a better-built object whose status rode on top of function. Stanley ran a different experiment. The Quencher was undifferentiated commodity steel in a market full of it, and the company manufactured status directly, through influencers, colorways, drops, and restock frenzies, with the product itself left essentially untouched. Consumers, asked why they paid the markup, insisted it was a quality play. The quality was unremarkable. The belief was doing all of the work.
This is the friction thesis operating in commercial space. Any brand, secular or sacred, is a stack of three things: an ideology, meaning what we believe about the world; a product, meaning how that belief is made real; and a messenger, meaning who carries the belief to others. For most of the modern era, this stack ran top-down, and the product sat at the center. A company manufactured a belief, poured it into something it could sell, and hired messengers, including spokesmen, actors, athletes, and door-to-door salesmen, to carry the belief outward to a customer who stood at the bottom, receiving. Nike believed everyone had the potential to be an elite athlete; it sold shoes; it paid the most elite athletes alive to embody the belief. The structure is a pyramid, and the pyramid exists to move product. Call it the broadcast brand: high-friction, source-bound, mediated by professionals, paced by money. It is the commercial twin of the institutions described earlier in this series, and it depended on the same physics.
Then the physics changed, and the pyramid inverted.
In a frictionless environment, messenger and customer become the same person, and product falls to the bottom of the stack. Ideology rises because it is the only part of the stack that is natively transmissible. A belief can be reposted; a supply chain cannot. The belief becomes the viral object, the customer becomes the evangelist, and the product becomes a downstream artifact of the faith. The pyramid collapses into a loop: ideology and messenger fused, the customer carrying the belief outward at zero cost, each new believer minting the next, much as religious movements spread and cohere.
The historical rhyme is exact. The medieval Church ran a perfect broadcast brand: an ideology, the Word of God; a product, Catholicism; and a professional messenger class, the priesthood, who alone were licensed to carry the belief to a laity that received it. The printing press was the friction-removal event. Once the population could read, the priesthood was disintermediated, the product lost its primacy, and the relationship between believer and ideology became direct and one-to-one. A new religion formed as the physics of transmission changed underneath the theology. Borrowing Jordan Hall’s terms, call the old form the Blue Church, top-down and symmetrically controlled, and the new form the Red Religion, flattened into self-replicating cells. The Reformation was a branding event before it was a theological one.
The mechanism that lets a brand become a self-replicating religion is the same one that produced the GameStop spike, the meme-coin cycle, and the manufactured consensus traced in the forecast. Synchronized belief hardens into temporary reality, and narrative compression arrives long before the underlying value has to survive contact with the world. This conversion has become a dominant business model of the attention economy and, as the next section shows, an epistemic hazard for AI systems. At scale, a founder who optimizes purely for transmissibility helps build a civilization that can no longer tell a durable claim from a viral one. The Stanley cup is harmless. The danger appears when a thousand institutions, candidates, currencies, and movements run on the same physics.
The frictionless environment of networked communication industrialized belief, turning the production of religions into a repeatable, ownable process available to anyone with a coherent ideology and a feed. The question this series keeps returning to applies here without modification. A brand-religion can move millions, fast, toward durable value or toward a mirage, and in a frictionless market, from the inside, the two read exactly the same.
The Reformation was a branding event before it was a theological one.
Identity Collapse and Fragmentation
The least understood consequence of the frictionless era is what it has done to the self. Jonathan Haidt has mapped this ground for adolescents; the frame has to widen. By stripping friction out of communication, the networked environment altered how we define personhood. Under older regimes, identity had natural limits: one body, one location, a manageable number of audiences, a finite set of familial and community roles. Identity was stabilized by the environmental and relational friction it met every day: the constant negotiation with an analog world.
The networked world made the self multi-locational, distributed across platforms, group chats, dating apps, work personas, archives, avatars, profiles, performance layers, and game handles, each with its own reputational and economic stakes. The self is everywhere and, somehow, less and less situated in a specific somewhere. As more of life is mediated through frictionless space, the self delaminates from the fitness landscape it is tied to. It begins to resemble a stack of partial selves moving through overlapping symbolic systems, each with its own incentives, clocks, and audience-capture pressures.
The current debate treats identity distortion as a problem of expression, recognition, or social contagion. The environmental shift is more basic: identity now forms inside digital landscapes where reputation, attention, and reward detach from the analog frictions that once stabilized personhood. What follows are four ways that detachment shows up in ordinary lives.
Context collapse: the flattening, applied to a person
Section V described how the networked era poured every bordered domain into one container. The same event happened to the audiences of a single life. Joshua Meyrowitz saw the first version of it in the broadcast era, when television began merging social situations that architecture had kept apart. Michael Wesch described it for early YouTube, where a person addressing a webcam was addressing everyone and no one. Alice Marwick and danah boyd named the networked form: context collapse, the condition in which every audience a person has ever had arrives at the same message at the same time.
A person once spoke differently to a spouse, a manager, a congregation, a childhood friend, a client, and a stranger on a train. That calibration was ordinary competence, and the old physics enforced it. Distance, cost, and the boundedness of a room meant the joke told at a bachelor party did not arrive at a school board meeting, and the version of yourself that showed up at work did not have to survive the scrutiny of people who had known you at nineteen.
Compression removed the walls between those rooms. A teacher's private account surfaces in a parent group chat. A nurse's holiday photograph is read by a patient's family as a statement about the ward. A hiring manager reads a decade of a candidate's context-free sentences before meeting them. Every statement now has to be drafted for the sympathetic reader, the hostile reader, the employer, the algorithm, and the permanent archive simultaneously, which is an impossible brief.
Two adaptations follow, and both cost something. Some people flatten their public voice into a register so cautious it transmits nothing, which is the personal version of the institution that speaks carefully and is not believed. Others split into managed personae, one per platform, and take on the ongoing labor of keeping the versions from meeting. The second strategy works until the platforms leak into one another, and they always do.
Case: audience capture
The creator economy runs a feedback loop tight enough to remake a person. Someone posts, the audience rewards the most legible or most extreme fraction of what was posted, the metrics report the reward within hours, and the creator supplies more of what performed. Gurwinder Bhogal named the endpoint audience capture: the audience's picture of the creator gradually becomes the creator.
The best-documented case is Nicholas Perry, who began posting vegan cooking videos in 2014 and, over a decade of audience reward, became the extreme-eating persona Nikocado Avocado. He has since described the arc publicly as a performance his audience shaped. The mechanism is not confined to internet celebrities. It runs in miniature through the professor whose most-shared take becomes his beat, the physician whose caution loses to a colleague's certainty, and the mid-career professional who notices which of her opinions travel.
This is the microphone/gavel problem turned inward. In the older arrangement, a person's sense of who they were was corrected by people who knew them across contexts and over years, whose approval was expensive to earn and slow to withdraw, and who had to live with the consequences of being wrong about them. The feed replaced that correction with a signal that answers instantly, at volume, from strangers with no stake in the outcome. Adaptive reach is the useful lens here. The captured self is climbing a local peak with great precision while the terrain that peak sits on extends about as far as the platform does.
Case: the personal brand and the transmissible self
The brand-religion physics described earlier apply to persons without modification. A professional who wants to be hired, funded, promoted, or heard is now advised to make herself transmissible, which means compressing a working life into an ideology a stranger can repost. Ideology rises to the top of the personal stack for the same reason it rose to the top of the commercial one: a position can be shared at zero cost and a body of work cannot.
That is why so much professional speech has taken on the cadence of doctrine. Doctrine travels. Calibrated uncertainty, the thing that actually signals expertise inside a field, dies on contact with a feed that sorts by confidence. The scientist from the opening of this series, holding career-defining evidence and no reach, is on the losing side of exactly this trade. Meanwhile the person who has optimized for transmissibility acquires reach that his underlying competence never earned, and then has to keep performing the compressed version of himself to hold the audience the compression attracted.
Accountability of any kind presumes a self that persists across contexts long enough to be answerable for what it said last year.
Case: the adolescent split and the permanent record
Teenagers have been running this experiment longest, which is why the damage surfaced there first. The main account and the second, smaller account maintained for a trusted few are a straightforward admission that one self cannot satisfy every audience at once. Adults have since adopted the same architecture under other names: the locked account, the close-friends list, the anonymous forum handle, the group chat where the real opinion goes.
Two features make the adolescent version more corrosive. The reputational stakes attach to a searchable archive assembled before the person was capable of consenting to it, and the correcting feedback comes from a metric rather than from anyone who will still be present in five years. A sixteen-year-old optimizing for the response of an audience that will not exist by the time she is twenty is doing something structurally identical to a company hitting a quarter by cutting the research the next decade depends on. High local fitness, almost no carry.
Case: identity rehearsed against a system with no will
Selfhood is built against resistance. A person becomes legible to himself partly through other people who can be disappointed, who refuse, who want incompatible things, and who leave. Synthetic companionship removes that resistance while preserving the feeling of intimacy, which is the last friction described in Section VIII arriving in the most personal room in the house.
The forecast treats this as a coming social infrastructure. The identity consequence is more specific. A self rehearsed for years against a partner with endless patience and no stake learns a model of relationship that does not survive contact with people who have their own. The algorithmic sediment problem compounds it: the companion's sense of what a good relationship looks like was distilled from archives already bent toward rupture, certainty, and drama, so the counsel it offers with such fluency carries the residue of an attention market rather than the record of relationships that actually worked.
Permanence and transience
Behind all of this sit two opposing forces, both byproducts of vanishing friction. Permanence produces maximalist identity consolidation. Everything a person does may be stored, searched, and resurfaced indefinitely, including after death, with no settled answer about who owns the record. A sentence written at twenty-two is retrievable at forty-two in a confirmation hearing, a custody dispute, or a due-diligence file, stripped of the context that made it intelligible. Europe's right-to-be-forgotten rulings are an early, partial attempt to reintroduce forgetting by law, which is a fair measure of how thoroughly the default has changed.
Transience produces the opposite. The network devours and discards a snapshot almost instantly. The story expires in a day, the post falls out of the ranking within hours, and a person can accumulate an enormous volume of expression that leaves no durable trace of who they were. Between permanent exposure and instant disposability, the rules of memory and disappearance are no longer stable enough to build a coherent self against. A person cannot tell which of today's utterances will follow them for thirty years and which will vanish before dinner, so the rational strategy becomes performing for both possibilities at once.
Where the debt is paid
Adaptive Debt was described in Section IV as an institutional and cultural balance, the adaptation a society owed a new regime and never made. Identity is where individuals pay that balance personally. Institutions can at least argue about governance, funding, and standards while they fall behind. A person absorbs an unmetabolized communication regime in the form of anxiety, vigilance, performance labor, and the ordinary exhaustion of maintaining several selves that must never be seen in the same room.
Haidt's work has been reduced to a conversation about a youth mental-health crisis. Underneath it lies something with a wider blast radius: the eradication of friction from our communication environment has produced an identity crisis at every scale, unmooring our relation to friendship, intimacy, family, community, citizenship, time, and permanence itself.
There is a civic version of this too, and it connects back to the institutional argument. Section X asks for provenance, meaning the condition under which a claim can be traced to a source that can be held to it. Persons are subject to the same requirement. Accountability of any kind presumes a self that persists across contexts long enough to be answerable for what it said last year. A public whose members cannot maintain that continuity has an epistemic problem and a civic one, because a citizenry of managed personae cannot hold itself, or anyone else, to account.
VIII. AI as Completion
The C6 era: an AI-mediated synthetic world.
The headline is simple: C5, the networked era, removed friction from circulation; C6, the synthetic era, removes it from generation. C6 also takes the last and most important friction with it: the human source, which had to intend, risk, answer, and stand somewhere behind the message. In the networked era, human beings still supplied the source material of the informational universe. In the synthetic era, messages need no human carrier at any stage. They can be generated, multiplied, optimized, and distributed by systems running at effectively limitless scale on their own.
The second loss from stripping out the human source is harder to name: emptiness. Communication without telos means no lived end, no human aim, no accountable purpose behind the message. For the first time, individuals and groups must navigate communication that can be perfectly coherent while detached from any human intention. Information can have no real origin, no stable chain of custody, and no required relationship between meaning and speaker. What does it mean to send messages to, and receive them from, a system that is knowledgeable yet indifferent? What is information that comes from a source that pattern-matches without care, worry, or any stake in whether the pattern serves you?
Algorithmic Sediment
A core sample of everything an AI can learn from, accumulating since 2005. New material settles on the surface; nothing beneath is ever removed. Three kinds of deposit build the record: the analog record (writing that met the world before the feed), engagement-shaped material (what performed on platforms), and synthetic material (what earlier machines generated). Drag the year.
Pair that frictionless generation and emptiness with algorithmic sediment, the residue of platform incentives embedded in the data AI later treats as knowledge, and society begins to fracture.
Take online relationship advice. For years, people have gone to forums like Reddit asking strangers whether to stay, leave, forgive, confront, or divorce. These forums are attention markets. A comment urging patience, repair, or ambiguity carries less algorithmic charge than one urging decisive rupture: break up, lawyer up, run. The latter offers moral clarity, narrative closure, and status to the person giving it. Over time, the archive tilts toward advice that performs well on the platform instead of advice tested against the lives of the people who took it. This is the machinery that had been working on the married couple in the prologue for months before their chatbots ever weighed in.
Now imagine a language model absorbing that archive and advising a real person about a real relationship. It treats the frequency of “leave” as evidence of collective wisdom. But that signal already passed through an engagement machine. It was never weighted by whether the relationship improved, whether the person regretted leaving, whether the facts were complete, whether the crowd rewarded drama over repair, or whether the post was even real.
The signal touched the platform before it touched reality.
That is algorithmic sediment: the residue of networked-era incentives absorbed into synthetic-era intelligence. The danger is that AI begins to mistake platform fitness, what survives inside an attention environment, for adaptive truth, what survives contact with reality across conditions.
We already know this pattern from information warfare. A falsehood can begin as an intentional act: a state actor, operative, troll farm, or propagandist plants a claim for strategic effect. At the origin there is intent and a source. As the claim moves through enough people, the origin decays. One repeats it cynically, another angrily, another because someone they trust believes it, until the claim becomes inherited background reality. “Who first made this up?” is useful early; “When did you begin believing it?” becomes nearly unanswerable once the claim is absorbed into a community’s symbolic environment. Propaganda’s goal is to disappear from its own origin. A counterfeit bill is most dangerous once the person passing it no longer knows it is counterfeit.
AI adds another laundering loop. It behaves like a money-laundering bank while presenting itself publicly as a gold-standard bank of objectivity. It absorbs the atmosphere of the data after the origin has disappeared, compresses the corrupted consensus into probabilistic weights, and returns it with the tone of neutral authority. The user sees fluency, polish, and apparent balance. It looks like “clean money.” The upstream distortions disappear: the bot campaign, the ragebait, the selection bias, the reward for moral certainty, the fake consensus that later became real belief.
AI is beginning to mistake platform fitness, what survives inside an attention environment, for adaptive truth, what survives contact with reality.
Many treat algorithmic sediment as an overblown fear because older analog reality is still buried in the models’ sediment. Once enough of the web is generated, answered, compressed, and republished by agents, the counterfeit currency becomes indistinguishable from the authentic, even to the model itself. The result is a contaminated oracle, harder to challenge because the contamination is submerged and mixed with clean content. Once this moves across medicine, politics, markets, education, law, and intimacy, AI begins laundering platform fitness into the ordinary decisions by which people and institutions navigate analog reality.
Networked communication made these distortions possible and ubiquitous. Autonomous communication makes them continuous and endemic: personalized rhetorical environments, synthetic intimacy, machine-generated persuasion, manufactured impressions of consensus, atmospheres of social reality produced on demand. The synthetic era arrives on ground the networked era has already destabilized.
IX. The Civilizational Question
AI announces its obvious threats first: job displacement, bioweapon uplift, autonomous weapons, agentic systems that wreck a business or move a market overnight, and the far-tail scenario in which autonomous systems act against human life. Those risks deserve the attention they are getting. Another category is slower and more enveloping: what kind of democratic civilization remains possible once communication no longer shares the physical, temporal, and biological constraints that once gave politics, institutions, markets, and identity their shape?
The conversation around the acute threats is accelerating, perhaps still too slowly. It is moving faster than the conversation around this second question, which remains stuck in the old frame. We blame content when the problem is architecture. We blame bad actors when the machine itself rewards distortion. We blame polarization when the rupture is that communication has slipped loose from the conditions that once made shared reality governable.
We are still fighting over what people are saying while refusing to reckon with the thing that has changed all saying.
This reaches the core of democratic governance. The old liberal intuition was simple: more speech, more freedom. Under earlier conditions, that was often true because speech operated inside an environment anchored by friction: scarce, episodic, embodied, bounded by human scale. Abandon those conditions and maximized speech can invert, eroding the very conditions freedom depends on. An election office can publish accurate guidance and still lose control of the story if forged screenshots, partisan clips, synthetic audio, and influencer speculation outrun the correction. Speech has multiplied; shared orientation has not. We live in the most speech-saturated moment in history while many of the civic benefits free speech once generated are in retreat.
The Case Against Friction
Honesty requires giving friction’s prosecutors their day in court. The frictions this series mourns were never neutral. They decided who got the microphone, and for most of history the answer was: almost no one. The editorial desk that slowed a false claim also spiked true ones that discomfited its owners. The credentialing systems that filtered out quacks also filtered out outsiders who happened to be right. Provenance, cost, and gatekeeping kept dissidents, minorities, women, and the poor out of public speech for centuries, and the institutions that compressed complexity on society’s behalf sometimes compressed it in their own interest. There was no golden age. Older regimes carried censorship, propaganda, elite distortion, exclusion, and mass delusion of their own, and they served narrow publics. When friction fell, voices that could never have passed the old gates finally reached the public: whistleblowers, survivors organizing against their abusers, movements assembling outside captured institutions, ordinary people fact-checking authorities who deserved it.
The printing press makes the same point at civilizational scale. The friction-removal event that produced the Reformation produced more than a century of religious war, and it also produced the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment. Friction removal has never been simple loss.
So the argument of this series is narrower than nostalgia, and it has to stay that way. The claim is that certain frictions performed a feedback function nothing has replaced, and that we removed the feedback along with the gatekeeping without noticing they were different things. A serious repair has to make that distinction its foundation: restore the frictions that let a society feel the terrain, refuse the ones that merely protected whoever held the gate. The same distinction supplies a test for every proposal that follows. If a friction cannot be shown to serve feedback, suspect it of serving power.
The structural claim, then, is bounded: the constraints that once made public reality interpretable, sequential, and contestable have been altered, while our laws, institutions, and habits of thought still operate as though they remained in place. The last remaining constraint, the human source, is on the precipice of being wiped out for good.
The forecast that opened this series functions as a test. If the argument is right, the failures should cluster around the same broken variables: source, sequence, provenance, context, cost, consequence, feedback. The preceding sections have tried to show why they do. The final question concerns which kinds of friction a society must rebuild to remain capable of truth, trust, judgment, and repair.
X. What Repair Would Require
Diagnosis alone does not repair anything. If friction was feedback, repair means deliberately reintroducing the kinds of friction that let a society feel the terrain again: identifying which frictions were load-bearing and rebuilding their functions under modern conditions. That path avoids nostalgic gatekeeping and frictionless acceleration alike, and it honors the distinction the previous section demanded, feedback rather than gatekeeping. Scattered pieces of a saner order already exist: forwarding limits, provenance standards, embargo systems, staged disclosure, disappearing messages, erasure rights. None is sufficient alone. Together they sketch five principles.
Reintroduce friction where it is load-bearing. Some environments should resist becoming instantaneous, global, permanent, and engagement-optimized. In high-stakes domains, delay can buy a civilization time to think without amounting to censorship. Messaging services that cap how far a single message can be forwarded are a crude early version. A healthy information system needs friction as one of its organs.
Restore provenance. A public that cannot tell who or what is speaking is already half-governed by manipulation. Human, institutional, and machine speech cannot stay casually interchangeable in the domains that matter most. Standards that attach origin and edit history to media point the right way. No system can guarantee truth. The aim is answerability: the condition under which a claim can be traced to a source that can be held to it.
Rebuild context and sequence. A system that makes every utterance searchable while stripping its setting, order, and frame reliably turns communication into distortion, because context is part of meaning. Repair means letting high-stakes material travel with what it needs to be understood: source, chronology, whether something is an excerpt, how confident the claim is, whether it is disputed.
Recover institutional translation instead of demanding raw immediacy everywhere. Mistrust does not make disintermediation a cure. Some institutions failed because they were captured; others failed because conditions no longer let any serious process pace interpretation before the swarm arrives. Those are different diseases with different treatments. The function worth protecting is the one an accident investigator performs when it releases verified facts early and reserves causal conclusions for later: staged disclosure that lets a slow process keep pace with a fast environment.
Protect zones of human opacity. A civilization that demands permanent legibility from every person will produce exhausted selves long before it produces wise publics. People need spaces where identity can escape being archived, scored, and performed. They also need to count on that opacity in advance. The aim is predictable opacity: knowing ahead of time what will remain bounded and where.
These five principles are deliberately stated as functions rather than programs. What they demand of a newsroom, a school system, a platform, an agency, or a company is its own body of work, and it is where this project goes next, on stages and inside institutions rather than on this page. Here the aim is to fix the functions themselves in view.
Limits and misreadings. These principles are easy to misread. Friction is distinct from censorship. Provenance cannot guarantee truth. Context does not excuse conduct. Institutional translation is no call for elite restoration. Opacity cannot become impunity. The goal is feedback under modern conditions, not a restoration of the past.
Ending
That is why AI matters so much, and why it has to be located properly. It arrives as the accelerant of a communication order already slipping beyond human scale. If C5, the networked era, dissolved the old bottlenecks of distribution, then C6, the synthetic era, threatens to dissolve the last bottleneck of authorship itself.
The stakes are whether free people can still generate enough non-synthetic shared reality to govern themselves at all: whether elections can keep their legitimacy, institutions their interpretive authority, law its adjudicable facts, and individuals a self not wholly colonized by permanent exposure and synthetic feedback.
For centuries, we treated friction in communication as a background condition, the way Newton treated gravity. Newton’s gravity was given; ours was built. We installed the conditions that made messages slow enough, costly enough, embodied enough, and anchored enough to remain human. Then, regime by regime, we removed them, never recognizing them as the feedback that let a society know where it stood. We may be about to discover how much of civilization rested on them.
If they were built, they can be rebuilt.
The question is whether democratic societies can reconstruct enough communicative friction before synthetic systems turn the present disorder into the atmosphere itself.

Algorithmic surround sound: the cumulative rhetorical environment produced when personalized systems deliver the same tilted message from many apparent directions at once, so that a manufactured position registers as ambient consensus.
Platform fitness vs. adaptive truth: platform fitness is what survives inside an engagement environment; adaptive truth is what survives contact with reality across conditions. The core risk of the synthetic era is mistaking the first for the second.

This work sits downstream of several traditions in media theory, evolutionary biology, democratic epistemology, attention economics, and AI discourse. The argument is synthetic because the crisis itself is synthetic. No single discipline can see it whole. The aim is to bridge these fields as far as possible without pretending they collapse into one another.
Marshall McLuhan, Understanding Media (1964)
McLuhan argued that a medium’s form, not its content, is what reshapes perception and society. “The medium is the message” meant the channel remakes whoever adopts it, regardless of what it carries.
DepartI take that as my starting point and press the question he left open: which property of the medium does the work? My answer is friction: the speed, cost, reach, and source-binding of a channel. I treat its removal as the mechanism by which the medium has been remaking us.
Neil Postman, Amusing Ourselves to Death (1985)
Postman showed that once television became dominant, it recast news, politics, religion, and schooling in the image of entertainment. The screen’s logic restructured public discourse around its own rewards.
DepartI extend his single market from television to the feed and rename the effect compression. The feed pours every bordered domain into one container trading in a single currency: attention. His diagnosis of single-marketplace distortion is accurate. I depart from him on the claim that trivialization is the central effect.
Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation (2024) and the structural-stupidity essays
Haidt argues that the smartphone era rewired childhood and corroded institutions’ ability to reason, producing both a youth mental-health crisis and a public sphere that can no longer think together.
DepartI treat that crisis as one surface of a deeper shift in communication physics. The same lost friction that destabilizes the adolescent self also destabilizes markets, institutions, and shared reality. I am after the common cause beneath the separate panics.
Yuval Noah Harari, Nexus (2024)
Harari retells the history of information networks from prehistory to AI. He distinguishes information from truth and argues that abundance has never guaranteed accuracy. Societies endure through their capacity for self-correction. AI, the first technology to act as an agent inside the network, now threatens that capacity.
DepartThis is my nearest neighbor, and my departure is one of depth more than direction. Where Harari names self-correction as the thing a democracy depends on, I ask what self-correction was physically made of and answer: friction, the feedback a society uses to feel the terrain. Where he frames AI as a new agent in the network, I frame it more narrowly as the removal of the last friction, the human source, from a system that had been shedding friction for a century. AI completes the sequence.
Sewall Wright and Stuart Kauffman, the fitness landscape (evolutionary biology, 1932 onward)
Wright modeled evolution as movement across a landscape of peaks and valleys, with fitness as height and populations climbing toward peaks or becoming stranded on local ones. Kauffman later named the “complexity catastrophe”: the moment an environment changes faster than an organism can adapt.
DepartI borrow that terrain and apply it to claims, recasting communication as the way a group navigates an adaptive landscape and a claim’s truth as how far across that landscape it keeps holding: its reach. Biology gives the map; my move is to redefine communication as collective navigation and locate friction as the feedback that tells a group where it stands.
What This Framework Adds
This framework contributes a mechanism connecting domains usually treated apart. Media theory shows that media reshape perception. Attention economics shows how platforms monetize focus. Institutional theory shows why trust depends on legitimacy. Evolutionary biology shows why feedback matters for adaptation. AI discourse shows what happens when synthetic systems enter the loop. The friction thesis connects these domains by identifying the lost variable underneath them: communication friction as social feedback.
This framework adds two larger constructs. The first is Adaptive Debt: for most of history, the interval between communication regimes was roughly equal to the time a society needed to absorb one. Those two clocks have now come apart, so every regime we fail to metabolize before the next arrives leaves a balance that compounds. The second is algorithmic sediment: an AI trained on the residue of the engagement era inherits a reality the feed has already filtered and distorted. It then mistakes what survived the platform for what survives the world, laundering platform fitness into apparent truth.
